    The Wind and the Sun

    Aesop; DePaola, Tomie (Ginn, 1972)
A nice little book that tells the story well. De Paola's cloudy wind is especially imaginative.

    The Lion and the Mouse.

    Aesop; Young, Ed (Doubleday, 1979)
The same book as the edition of 1979 but with a slightly different spine and title page. The illustrations here may be a bit darker. See my comments on the original.

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse: An Aesop Fable

Aesop (Rand McNally & Company, 1973)
I thought I had this book, and was wrong again! In fact, it is a copy of the much larger book of the same year from the same company. Where that book was 8 x 10¼, this little book is 4¾ x 6½. This book needs thinner ...

    The Hare and the Frogs

Aesop; Stobbs, William (The Bodley Head, 1978)
This booklet takes the hare through a number of attempted escapes from danger. He runs from the storm, a deer, a bird, a hedgehog (an army of swords and daggers, the hare cries), a bull, a ram, a fox, a hyena, a rooster, ...

    la liebre y la tortuga

Aesop; Valeri, M. Eulalia (Ediciones La GaleralaGalera, 1973)
This version places the story outside Barcelona. The best of the illustrations is of the bunny sleeping against a tree. This rabbit napped until the turtle caught up. Then the rabbit took off to Vic and there had dinner ...

    The Lion and the Mouse.

Aesop; Young, Ed (Ernest Benn, 1979)
Delightful single-frame pictures. I would love to use one or two of them if I get a chance to present the story. This book presents a different moral from most for this fable: a change in circumstance makes the strong ...

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse.

    Aesop; Garcia, T. R (Troll Associates, 1979)
Cute but simple figures. Many of the drawings lack color and definition.

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse: An Aesop Fable.

    Aesop (Rand McNally, 1973)
Large and inexpensive kids' book in big format with simple and sentimental pictures. I do not see much here to use.

Wie die Maus den Loewen rettete

Aesop; Aesop; Young, Ed (Artemis Verlag, 1979)
Very well done, with beautiful detailed illustrations. A good example of contemporary work with a single fable (and in another language).

    The Hare and the Tortoise

    Aesop (Price/Stern/SloanPricei/Stern/Sloan, 1979)
Good pop-ups, some of which even incorporate a bit of action, for example when the hare rises up tired or when the race-finishing judge waves the checkered flag. See my near-identical Spanish version under 1979.
