Here is the original after which The Miller, His Son and Their Donkey was published in English. I will repeat my comments made there, but I want to make some further comments too. I wrote then The big-format pictures are satisfactory. The order of elements is slightly changed: the episode in which both miller and son walk comes late, and then a traveler says that one of the three could ride. They interpret that remark to suggest that the donkey should ride. Note that there is no motive for the travels (e.g., to sell the donkey). Looking at this original has given me a chance to notice some of the better turns in this version, written and illustrated. The German is clearer than the English that the ass kicks both father and son in den Hintern. The father lands, in English, face down in a heap of straw. In German he lands auf den Mist. While manure is sometimes mixed with straw, he lands in the manure. Where the English moral is simply You can never please everyone, the German has a pointed little quatrain: Alle wollen dich belehren, der du selber weise bist, wollen dir das Glück bescheren, und du landest auf dem Mist. There is that Mist again!en_US
