This retreat was given at the Demontreville Jesuit Retreat House near Lake Elmo, Minnesota, January 28-31, 2010. I was born and raised in Milwaukee, the third of four children of Richard and Mary Jane Kroll. I graduated from St. Eugene grade school in 1979 and from Marquette University High School in1983. I received a B.S. degree from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in 1987, and entered the Society of Jesus that fall. After pronouncing first vows in St. Paul, MN in 1989 and spending one year in the Jesuit Humanities Program at Creighton University in Omaha, I completed three years of philosophy and theology studies at Centre Sèvres, the Jesuit school in Paris. I returned to Marquette High for three years of full-time ministry before finishing a Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) in 1999 at Weston Jesuit in Cambridge, MA. That summer I was ordained a priest, and then spent another five years at Marquette High as a teacher and coach. I completed the final stage of Jesuit formation (tertianship) in Sydney, Australia in 2005, pronouncing final vows in 2006. I spent two years as a pastor on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation from 2005-07, before coming to Demontreville retreat house as associate director in the fall of 2007. I enjoy all racket sports, especially tennis and squash.
